Conventions of the thriller include the setting of the thriller, thrillers are
often set in exotic settings such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions, or
high seas. Thrillers typically have a manly hero that is good with danger, these
men are usually officers, spies, soilders or pilots. But sometimes they are
normal peoples who have been drawn into the dangers. Heroes are traditionaly men,
however women are becoming more common.
Thrillers can sometimes overlap with another genre creating a subgenre, they are distinguished between each other by the structure. Crimes in thriller films are usually serial, mass murder, terrorism or assassinations. Violance is usually in the standard plot of the film.

In a triller genre the codes and conventions are used to outline what distinguishes the thriller genre. The codes and conventions of a thriller are shown using, the camera shots, music, lighting techniques and the mise-en-scene. In films they use these to make it clear to the audience that they are watching a thriller, the filming industry make the films interesting by using fast cuts, and intimidating camera angles, this makes the film much more exciting and interesting for the viewer.
In my media project I have used many of the thriller codes and conventions that are seen in the horror thriller genre. However I have added conventions that would be used in a horror genre. Not all films follow the typical conventions and have proved popular with audiences. I decided create a horror thriller to gain a wider audience and be more entertaining for the viewer.
I managed to follow the most common codes and conventions of the triller genre, using techniques that would be used in a film produced in the film industry. I tried to use the same lighting, camera shot and fast cuts, hopefully making my media project as professional as I possibly could.

In my media product I have tried to use a number of different shots and camera angles. To make my media product more interesting for the viewer. In the shot when Jessica is walking down the corridor I have positioned the camera at the same level as her. I have done this to try and put the viewer in the same 'shoes' as her to create tension. It makes the audience prepare for a jump moment. The girls jumper stands out against the redish light and area she is in. This is similar in the film 'The Shining', the young boy is faced with a long corridor, and stands out with his red jumper. The young boy also has the high handle bars of his bike which acts like a sheild and protects him, he can use them to hide behind. However in my media project Jessica doesn't have anything to hide behind, I have done this to make her look more vulnerable, instead of having a mild form of protection.

To follow the triller codes and conventions in a thriller is to objectify my female character. I have managed to objectify my female character in my thrillers camera shots. In my media thriller I have objectified my female character by using her legs and bum. Her legs are constantly on show and emphasised by using long shots and following them. The picture on the right shows her bum as being the main focus point. By focusing on her bum and legs in my media thriller makes her more of an object, instead of a person as a whole. Hopefully this will attract male attention without them feeling like a pervert. Due to my actor being young, I tried not to objectify her too much, due to her being young and she might not to be comfortable with it.

I have also followed the codes and conventions by using quick shots and a jumpy darkness. By having quick shots buids up the tension and makes it much faster for the veiwer. Quick cuts increase the tension and emotions between the viewer. Like all editing, its used to manipulate the emotions and perceptions of the people watching to experience the thriller that is best suited for the story. I have mostly used quick cuts when Jessica enters the house, I used quick cuts in the scene between Jessica and the ghostly figures, I have done this to create as much tension as possible and gives my media product a scary sense to it. In the scene the lights flicker, I have done this to tr and make my audience jump, hopfully not expecting the figures to appear in and out of lighting changes. I want my media project to be gorry and eerie for my audience. This is shown in the film 'The Shining', as a good example.
In my media project as well as following as many thriller codes and conventions I also tried to follow as many theories as possible. I have used the male gaze theory, which is popular within industrial films. I have also used the enigma theory, I have done this by using the audience. The viewer doesn't know why Jessica is being haunted by goshtly figures in a house she knows of.
If my media project was to continue the enigma would build up and eventury unravel the mystery of why Jessica was haunted. This would create tension for the veiwer and hopfully it would want them to watch more and find my continued media project interesting. Most of the interseting thrillers have an interseting enigma attracting a large audience. I have also tried to use the opposition theory in my media project, the weak vunlnerable female is challenged with facing a creepy house by herself.

In my media project I added in extra shouting from the children calling for help. The shouts for help would be in the narrative, however I wanted to hear the girl goshtly figure shouting and the young boys call for help. I faced the problem of the wind being to loud and covering up the calls for help. The calls for help are supposed to be diagectic sound, when the sound is presented from where it originated from in the film's world. Diagectic sound can be either off screen or on screen but part of the narrative, the characters can hear it. However because of the wind I had to record the calls for help individually and edit them into my media thriller. The childrens calls for help makes the story enigma more mysterious for the audience. the calls for help make the audience wonder whats going on and allows tension to build up, the viewer doesn't know that there would be children calling for help, making my thriller a bit more worrying, and the audience worry and wonder what is happening to the children.
The video below shows the begining of my media project, as she is running we can hear her music playing from her earphones which has been edited in to be diegetic sound. Then we hear the children calling for help, yet again edited in as diegetic. As the video stops the spooky music just starts to play, which is non diegetic.
Another way in which I have followed the codes and conventions of media is by using music. Music is important in a thriller because it helps to create tension and an atmosphere. While the credits where running I used a spooky slow piano music, to make the audince wonder whats going on. After the credits we see Jessica for real, she is listening to music as part of the narrative. We can hear her music, the music from her earphones has also been edited in as diagectic, because she can hear it. When the children start calling for help the non diagectic spooky music starts playing. I used a weird sounding peice of music which changes throughout and builds up to its peak during the scene when Jessica walking in on the ghostly children. the music was very important in my media project, this is because without any music the video wouldn't be creepy or scary.

As well as following the codes and conventions of the triller genre I have also broke a few. The main thriller convention I have broken is giving Jessica, a female, strength. She is actually quite intelligent and brave, in industrial Hollywood films the females have to bravery and its up to the men to be brave. On the left we see her about to enter the daunting looking house. So when she is brave enough to enter the spooky house, on her own with confidence, it breaks some of the typicaly thriller codes and conventions. I have done this to make my film more interesting for the audience, especially females. However the last scene we see of my media project the girl goes back into being a weak and vulnerable female, and is defenseless against the spooky chlidren.
