The Shining Analysis
The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick released in 1980 is a very eerie thriller movie.
One scene that I find is particularly interesting is when Daniel, a young boy, is taking a ride on this tricycle/pedal car, he is travelling down a long corridor. The camera is the the same height as the boy this it to try and make the viewers feel the same as the boy. The corridor is very big and echos, the noise of the peddle trike on the floor creates a creepy noise which is kept in the film to add effect. The walls are painted a manky green colour, not due to fashion at the time, the green colour helps to symbolise a hospital, hospitals are usually painted green because it is considered a calming colour. The corridor could be made to look creepy, like a place one wouldn't want to find themselves, rather than a normal hospital the corridor is to be considered something much more scary a mental hospital, this would be symbolic of the film and the way the characters act later on. As the boy disappears around the corridor it prepares us for a jump moment and makes it tense, viewers start to get worried, they want to protect the boy.
When the meson scene changes (as he turn the corner) to a floral decorated wall it makes the place look less creepy and more homely, the young boy stands out against the wallpaper and gives us something to focus on due to his big red jumper. Once turning around corridors he meets the two girls, the girls are the ghost/past figures they are dressed the same. We are freaked out by the girls because of their ability to stay still and dead like, unlike normal children and their knowledge of his name. The girls are both wearing the same clothes which gives us a sense of 'double trouble'. When the scene changes to a quick image of the two girls dead it makes the viewer very shocked, this is due to the very quick view which is one second this is because it keeps the impact. There is a large axe lying next to the body of one of the children, shows how small the children are, the axe being the same side. The blood is everywhere, and leves a really gorey affect on the reader, there is a hand print, this shows that the girls tried to escape when they were being murdered. The turned up chair shows the girls used it as a shield in their struggle to save their life. It also makes the viewer wonder what's going on.
The girls voices sound really far away and distant, this could have been done to show the distance. The girls voices are also synchronised, as well as their looks, giving a 'double trouble' feel about them towards the viewer. The fact that the girls know his name affects the narrative, the boy hasn't meet them.
We see the boys face as a close up there is a blurred background and a limited depth of field, centers on the young boys terrified face. His chest is moving loads and very deep, he is breathing heavily. The handle bars on his tricycle are large and blocking, the handle bars in front of him make it look like a protective shield, puts up a protective barrier.
The strings in the music build up to a crosendio, but the drums drop when he turns the corner and sees the two girls for the first time. The sound of the music is still playing then there is a massive drum beat big on brass very deep music. When a discordant note is there it emphasises the whole scene.
The shots change, they change to long, mid, etc. As well as the speed and length they last. For example slower then faster then slower, long shots then closer. Playing with speed distance.

Analyse a scene from a film, applying feminist theory to explore feminist representation
A good film showing feminist theory would be transformers, this film is aimed at a male audience. In the shot we see a car, a car can be used in films to symbolise many things such as the size and bulk, can show muscle in a male. Phallic symbols such as a long bonnet can be used to show a certain male quality.
The dialogue exchanged between the two characters has a certain dirty talk about it for example "That's pretty impressive" "Squirts fuel to go faster" "Oh I do go fast!" If we where to only listen to what they were saying it does sound very dodgy and sexual.
At one point the camera pushes in towards her body, the camera in feminist films usually cuts the female body up into different body parts to focus on. The camera focuses on her belly button, her belly button signifys a vaginal porthole, her belly button is well showed off to the audience. Her belly is toned and shown off well. She is wearing a crop top to show of her toned belly and belly button, the crop top colour is similar to a skin tone colour by doing this it is playing with the idea that she is naked. She is thrusting her hips about in a sexual way and the camera notices this. The low cut trousers are there to show as much of her midriff of as possible and give the audience more of a naked illusion. The white belt she is wearing brings attention to her belly, draws the audience to her belly and vaginal porthole.
When her face is shown as a close up her massive lips signify a vaginal porthole. having her mouth slightly open signify oral sex. Her earrings are reminiscent of a sex toy as well as signaling to a vaginal porthole. The big earrings bring more attention to her mouth and the mouth signifying oral sex. Freudian theory, Freud was obsessed with the eyes and facial features, and that we are sexually drawn to facial features. Fetishisation to facial features. The camera looks at the female character in a scopophillia way by focusing on certain parts.
He keeps looking at her bare skin where her belly button is, he is looking at her vaginal porthole.
The sunset light shows up the sweat, the sweat is shown as if in a sexual way. We notice that she has a big belly button, its a very sexual shot and looks a lot like porn because of her belly button. There is lots of sexual lust shown.
More of the dialogue is like dirty talk "little lose" this is said when she is bent over as well as vigorously rubbing and shaking, man handling his engine.
The camera then cuts her body parts up again and she is reduced to an ass shot. Then the camera slowly moves up focusing on her belly button and boobs. Her hair is brown to give a sassy feel about the whole thing. The close up has a blurred background, the background is blurred out to her. There is also a reminiscent sound to a sexual sound.
We notice that when the camera shows us a boob shot the crop top is unbuttoned, this gives the audience a sense of her boobs bursting through and being big. She knows what shes dong with the car, this could reflect her performance in bed. He is viciously looking at her.

Psycho Analysis
Janet Leigh is cast as the main protagonist in the film psycho. The opening of the movie is shown with the character in the bathroom there is the sound of the toilet flushing, the sound of the flushing shows that its very intimate and shows her private side of her. We see that she is fully naked, we notice that she has a well defined back, back in the time this film came out it would be shocking to see how much of her body is shown.
She looks like she is worshiping.
At one point we get her point of view and we feel like we have been put into her shoes. We get a view of the shower from below looks like an eye watching her, this is like a foreshadowing of when her killer is watching her from behind the shower curtain.
As she is in the shower she is caressing herself all over this shows that it is very intimate. We then get a shot of her when she looks very small in the frame, this makes her look vulnerable.
When the door opens behind her the light enhances the dark figure standing there, the light changes and the back light is important because it makes us see the dark figure. The figure approaches very slowly this is done deliberately and makes the audience more actively involved because they know more than her. The figure gets closer when she comes closer. We know that it is a male figure because of the short hair and the strong build. We notice that the figure is dressed as she was, trying to look like her. We don't see the identity due to it being a silhouette. The knife the figure is using looks blunt and therefore painful, the figure uses a downwards thrust with the knife and the music doesn't kick in until the moment when she is touched by the knife. Three sounds used all at once.
There is then a close up, it moves straight into one, then a extreme close up and this shows the mouth sexualised in fear.
Then there is a higher angle shot, the point of view of the killer, from this point of view we can see that she is fully naked, the viewer is in power. The stabber looks just like a woman especially with the pleated blouse. We can clearly see that the women getting stabbed is exposed, the social change in the 60's with film, the woman goes into a self defense position. The knife goes staright into her belly button, looking like forced penetration, symbolical of rape. There is lots of violence and fast cuts, leaving the rest to the imagination. When she turns she is stabbed from behind, shown that the killer is a back stabber, somebody she knows. She is starting to put up less of a defense. And there is blood appearing in the bath. The footage is in black and white to make it look less gory for that time period.
As soon as the killer finishes and leaves the room the music changes, there is a different string music going on this is beacuse the strings are deeper this is when she is dying. So when the stabbing is happening the stringsare at a high notebut the speed also changes when she is dying as well as the pictch. During the stabbing as well as the fast intese musicthe shots are also very fast.
When she is dying she looks very small in the shot, yet again this is to create sympathy towards her. As she is dying she is reaching out towards thecamera, so she is reachingtowards the audience, this then makes the audience feel sorry for her and guilt is created because they enjoyed watching her death, it was entertaining for them. When we get a hand shot it has a limited depth of field and is unclear what she is doing. The last moments of her life are shown in lots of detail, lots of tiny details are shown, such as her pulling down the curtains, this is shown slowly and shows the horror of the moment. The plug hole is focused on and the blood is washing away down it. This represents her life draining out of her, her life is literally washing away. There is then an overlap and the shot disolves from the plug hole into the eye. The plug hole is a fore shaddow of the eye, the shot is moving with the vortect. We know that it is a womens eye because of the long eyelahes showing sopohafilia. The eyes are usually considerd the gate way to the soul. She is wearing make up showing that she is a woman. eye lashes are long, sympathy is created. We are watching a feminin woman and her consiousnes disapear, we see the changes of light in her eye as her life just washes away. The camera then pulls back and we see her lifeless face.
